Kingsize Soundlabs Installs Solid State Logic ORIGIN in its Studio A as a Replacement for its 20-Year Old Vintage Console

ORIGIN chosen for its classic in-line design, hybrid workflows and ‘SSL’ sound

Los Angeles, California, February 24, 2026 — Kingsize Soundlabs, which owns and operates multiroom recording studio facilities in several northeast Los Angeles locations, has installed a Solid State Logic ORIGIN 32-channel analogue mixing console in Studio A, which is in the city’s Glassell Park neighborhood. Offering 16 buses, E Series EQ and renowned PureDrive mic preamps across all 32 channels, and with 64 faders available for monitoring and mixdown, ORIGIN is a perfect fit for the modern, cost-conscious studio, according to owner Dave Trumfio.

Studio A was the first room that Trumfio built after moving to the Los Angeles area in 2000 after a decade in Chicago, where he originally established Kingsize Soundlabs. The new ORIGIN has replaced a vintage console that was in the room for the past 20 years and not only had maintenance issues but also lacked some of the functionality necessary for today’s production workflows. Trumfio spent some time considering all his options to replace the old desk, he says. “Then Ronna, my wife, who manages the studio, pretty much gave me an ultimatum and said it needed to be one of three major brands,” to maximize the room’s booking potential.

Perfect for the modern studio
“We've always been an affordable recording studio. Coming up through the late ‘80s and ‘90s, we always made space for up-and-coming indie bands to make records,” Trumfio explains. Jeff Ehrenberg, founder and CEO of pro AV equipment supplier Providence Sound and Vision, with whom Trumfio has been working for years, suggested the new SSL console. “ORIGIN’s value was undeniable — and I was just blown away with what you got,” Trumfio reports. “It’s perfect for a modern studio and for what we need to do.”

He elaborates, “Most of the work we do in Studio A is tracking. The ORIGIN is a Swiss Army knife that has really helped us raise the bar. It has 16 buses; I had been considering consoles that were eight buses at double or triple the price. And for monitoring, there are 64 faders, 32 small and 32 large. I'm also very, very happy with the way the ORIGIN sounds, especially the new PureDrive mic pre’s; you can run them super clean, or you can run them in their ‘colorful’ DRIVE mode. In modern culture, once they are in the box, a lot of people stay in the box. So the front end is really important, whether you are super conservative or you want to go for it and print some tone. For that front-end type of tracking workflow, getting an ORIGIN was a no-brainer.”

The studios hybrid centrepiece
The ORIGIN is the centrepiece in Studio A, Trumfio continues, which features both a DAW and a 24-track analogue tape machine as well as racks of outboard processing. “Whether there is an outside engineer or an in-house engineer working the session, they know they can route anything anywhere they need it to go. The ORIGIN is a big router with 32 channels of SSL EQ. Along with that, we have sidecars with other flavours of EQ and mic pre’s, so people can record through ‘tilty’ EQs, push that into the SSL and then sculpt it a little more.”

Trumfio grew up in Chicago using a variety of mixing console known for adding a certain character to productions. “I always saw SSLs as having a super-clean, pop kind of sound. But I grew up with a brand of console that looked vintage but was actually very, very clean and had a fully parametric EQ. When I moved to L.A., with its West Coast rock mentality, I missed being able to sculpt the mid-range and do more subtractive and more pinpoint EQ. And now I realize, the ORIGIN is the console I've always wanted.”

Reduced operating costs and intelligent powering
Not only did the ORIGIN cost less and offer more features than the alternative console choices he had been considering, but it has also reduced day-to-day running costs, Trumfio reveals. For one thing, running a studio with a vintage console typically adds to the air conditioning costs. But the reduced power demand of the ORIGIN’s design also helps keep costs down. “I'm not one to turn equipment on and off; I just grew up that way. But this new design is just incredible. You plug it into the wall, and it works,” he says, and when it’s no longer in use, it goes to sleep. “It saves energy, so our electric bills have gone down.”

Add the electricity savings to the reduced maintenance costs, and the ORIGIN has significantly lowered Studio A’s running costs. “We have had zero issues with the console — knock on wood — and have made zero tech calls. Ronna has noticed the difference in the bills. She said, ‘You're not spending $10,000 a year to fix your console.’ Frankly,” Trumfio says, “that has also been a godsend for the reduced stress levels.”

Having been in operation for more than three decades, Kingsize Soundlabs boasts an enviable list of local, national and international artist clients and has seen an almost equally long list of engineers and producers come through its doors. Since the ORIGIN rolled into Studio A it’s been busier than ever, Trumfio says. “Yeah Yeah Yeahs did a session recently. A hip-hop artist, named Smino, Sampa the Great, a hip-hop artist from Zambia, and another hip-hop artist named Saba have done a lot of work in Kingsize recently. There’s also Nate Sib, a young artist that's on Republic. He's been locking out the room for his project. We love it when people take it for long stretches of time. And there have been just tons of drum tracking going on.”
