Beatport Launches New Genre: Indie Tech

Developed with input from across the dance music community, Indie Tech arrives with its own genre page, Top 100 chart, and dedicated feature space for the sound’s artists and labels.

London, U.K., October 1, 2026 — Beatport has launched Indie Tech, a new standalone genre page for the heavier, more club-focused sound that has grown within contemporary Indie Dance.

Built around punchy drums, prominent basslines, and bold synth hooks, Indie Tech brings unusual sounds and edgy ideas into peak-time arrangements. Its influences stretch across Tech House, Melodic House & Techno, Bass House, and Mainstage, with an emphasis on driving grooves, seismic builds, and dance floor impact.

The decision follows outreach to artists and labels across the Indie Dance, Indie Tech, and the wider electronic music community, who showed strong support for giving this sound its own category. Those discussions also informed Beatportal’s Left to Indie: Reclaiming the Spirit of Indie Dance, which explored Indie Dance’s roots in post-punk, disco, leftfield club music and the instinct for experimentation that has always defined it.

In doing so, the distinction became increasingly clear between that tradition and the heavier, more polished, peak-time sound that had also been living under the Indie Dance umbrella. Creating Indie Tech as a standalone category gives that club-focused sound its own home, while allowing Indie Dance to remain more closely connected to the spirit and musical lineage that originally defined it.

“We don’t always get everything right, and when we don’t, it’s important that we listen, learn and do right by the communities we serve,” said Raph Pujol, Beatport’s VP of Global Curation. “Indie Dance has built a strong identity and community over the years, and as new sounds began to emerge and evolve within the genre, we felt a responsibility to protect that identity while still embracing where the music is heading. Creating a new space allows both to thrive on their own terms – giving the Indie Dance community the clarity it deserves, while giving this new Indie Tech movement the room to grow and establish an identity of its own.”

The new category comes with its own genre page, Top 100 chart, and dedicated space for featuring tracks and releases. It recognizes the sound's success and gives artists and labels a major opportunity to build on the momentum they’ve created over the past few years. For DJs digging, it brings the sound together in one place.

Artists associated with the sound include Adam Ten, Mita Gami, Vintage Culture, and Max Styler, alongside labels such as Maccabi House, Stil vor Talent, Diynamic, and Higher Ground.

“We feel that indie tech represents the evolution of the more club-focused side of indie dance, bringing together driving grooves, powerful basslines, and melodic energy designed for the peak of the dance floor,” said electronic music duo HIGHLITE. “For us, having a dedicated category means giving this sound a clear identity and creating a space where artists and listeners can continue to push it forward.”
