AJH Synth V-Scale: Not Just a Buffered Multiple, but a Tool to Fine Tune CV Signals and Improper VCO Scaling

Video demonstrates how V-Scale can help correct a vintage synth's tuning / scaling by +/- 5% while also serving as a highly accurate buffered mult.

Newcastle, England, October 12, 2026—Not all buffered mults are born equal. AJH Synth's V-Scale not only serves as a highly accurate buffered mult, but is also capable of solving impedance mismatch issues and tracking problems. On the V-Scale, four of its five outputs are able to be adjusted up or down by making fine adjustments between +/-5% from the front panel. As a result, VCOs or VCF’s that don’t track at exactly 1V/Oct can be adjusted to track correctly without having to re-calibrate the VCO or VCF themselves. In this video, AJH Synth and @DreamsOfWires‬ demonstrates how a vintage synth is able to play in tune with a larger Eurorack system thanks to the V-Scale.

The video demonstrates how a V-SCALE can be used compensate for tuning and tracking problems on an old vintage synthesizer from the late 70's. It also shows how the AJH Synth Precision Voltages can be useful in helping establish a root key, since this module is able to accurately offset an incoming control voltage by semitones and octaves, either up or down. After tuning and tracking issues are addressed, which should be a priority in any performance, a short piece by @DreamsOfWires‬ follows that employs other AJH modulesincluding the Tap Tempo VC-LFO, the Chance Delay, and the Matrix VCF.

Some older synths actually use .95V / Oct rather than the modern standard of 1V/Oct—the V-Scale can easily remedy this by bringing it closer to the desired voltage - whether it is too sharp or flat. This achieved by adjusting a small trimmer on the V-Scale with a small flathead screwdriver. When turned clockwise, the scale of the 1V/Oct output is increased, and it is decreased by turning it counter-clockwise. The trimmers on the V-Scale require a very small flat-head screwdriver for adjustments. These micro trimmers allow for many turns for fine-tuning, and are also used to avoid accidental adjustments during a performance.

This patch by @DreamsOfWires‬ features the gate output of the sequencer running into an AJH Synth Chance Delay, which provides interesting variation in the sequence. As 'chance' is reduced, gates - or sequence steps - are randomly ignored making it less predictable and rhythmically more creative. The background drones featured in the video consist of (3) AJH Synth MiniMod VCOs, and the new AJH Matrix VCF filter.

About AJH Synth

AJH Synth is headed up by Allan J Hall, who has been involved with synths, electronics and music for several decades. He started by building a guitar fuzz box at the tender age of 12 and his interest in synthesisers and electronic music soon followed, fuelled by an unhealthy overexposure to early Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, Vangelis and Kitaro. For the last 15

years he has been building and modding synth systems both for himself and other electronic musicians, as well as spending some time as a semi-pro musician playing keyboards in several rock and tribute bands. Allan spent five years as a service technician repairing and modifying Moog, Arp, Korg, Roland and other analogue synthesisers along with some Pro Audio design work, previous to this he spent two years designing and building "boutique" valve (tube) guitar amplifiers. AJH Synth are based near Durham, in the northeast of England, where this small but enthusiastic bunch of synth heads now indulge their passion for all things modular.
